Law review article published on the mathematics underlying e-discovery: “HASH: The New Bates Stamp”
September 10, 2007 | 2 Comments
Regular readers of this blog know that I frequently refer to the excellent posts by Ralph Losey on his blog “E-Discovery Team.” Ralph has just published an authoritative law review article in the Journal of Technology Law and Policy on hashing algorithms, in which he persuasively argues that a document’s truncated hash value should replace the traditional Bates stamping method as a means of identifying the document. His e-Discovery Team blog entry announcing the article is here, while the article itself can be read here.

Larry: A new way to promote a good digital chain of custody is to authenticate records with a voice signature. A voice signature (which uses a form of hash) can help show who collected the evidence, when it was collected, and that it has not changed since collection. What do you think? –Ben http://hack-igations.blogspot.com/2008/04/text-message-investigations.html
Ben: An intriguing concept. It would be interesting to know whether the techniques developed by MyElectronicEvidence.com have been tested in court. Larry
